Fire Protection Starts in Design

Fire safety decisions made at the drawing board are the cheapest and most effective ones. During preconstruction, we coordinate with architects and engineers on fire-rated assemblies (walls, floors, and shafts that contain fire and smoke long enough for occupants to escape), egress design with protected stairs and clearly defined exit paths, and properly zoned sprinkler and alarm systems. For hotels and assisted living facilities, that includes the enhanced requirements these occupancies demand, such as full sprinkler coverage and alarm and notification systems designed for sleeping occupants, including residents who may need assistance evacuating.

Just as important is what happens behind the walls: firestopping. Every penetration through a rated assembly, whether pipe, conduit, or duct, is sealed with listed firestop systems so a two-hour wall actually performs like one. It’s invisible in the finished building and absolutely critical.

Preventing Fires During Construction: NFPA 241 in Practice

Most construction fires are preventable, and the causes repeat: hot work, temporary heating, electrical faults, smoking, and arson on unsecured sites. Our jobsite fire prevention program targets each one:

Hot work permits. Welding, cutting, grinding, and torch work happen only under a permit system. The area is cleared of combustibles or shielded, an extinguisher is at hand, and a fire watch remains on station after the work ends, because smoldering ignition is often delayed.

Housekeeping and combustible control. Debris is removed on schedule, flammable liquids are stored in approved containers and cabinets, and combustible material staging is planned rather than piled wherever there’s room.

Temporary power discipline. Overloaded circuits and damaged cords start fires. Our electrical safety program covers how we manage temporary power, and it does double duty as fire prevention.

Standpipes and access. On multi-story projects, standpipes rise with the building so firefighters have water where they need it, and site logistics preserve fire department access at all times.

The finished building’s first responders are its own systems. We install automatic fire sprinklers designed to NFPA 13, fire alarm and mass notification systems to NFPA 72, and smoke detection appropriate to the occupancy. These systems are not simply installed; they’re tested, commissioned, and demonstrated to the fire marshal before a certificate of occupancy is issued. For hospitality and senior living clients, we also coordinate the documentation their operators need for ongoing inspection, testing, and maintenance from day one.

Training and a Fire-Aware Crew

Equipment doesn’t prevent fires. People do. Our crews are trained on extinguisher use and the fire hazards specific to their trade, fire prevention is a recurring toolbox talk topic, and every worker has stop-work authority when they see an unsafe condition. Evacuation routes and assembly points are established for the jobsite itself, because the building under construction needs an emergency plan just as much as the finished one will.
