Falls are the single deadliest hazard in our industry. According to OSHA, falls account for more than one in three construction fatalities every year, and fall protection has been the most frequently cited OSHA violation for over a decade. Behind those statistics are real people carpenters, ironworkers, roofers, framers and that’s exactly why fall prevention in construction isn’t a checkbox at Patterson Construction Group. It’s the foundation of how we build.
As a commercial general contractor delivering hotels, assisted living facilities, and multi-story projects across Florida, our crews work at height every single day. Here’s an inside look at our fall protection program and what an effective one should look like on any jobsite.
Why Fall Prevention in Construction Is Non-Negotiable
OSHA groups the leading causes of construction deaths into the “Fatal Four”: falls, struck-by incidents, electrocutions, and caught-in/between accidents. Falls top that list by a wide margin.
The regulations are clear. Under OSHA standard 29 CFR 1926.501, construction workers must be protected from falls at heights of six feet or more above a lower level and at any height when working above dangerous equipment. On our multi-story hotel and commercial projects, that threshold is crossed within the first days of vertical construction, which is why fall protection is engineered into our plans before the first shovel hits the ground.
Compliance is the floor, not the ceiling. A genuine construction safety program goes beyond avoiding citations it sends every worker home in the same condition they arrived.
Our Fall Protection Plan Starts Before Construction Does
Effective fall prevention begins in preconstruction, not after the first near-miss. For every project, we develop a site-specific fall protection plan built on:
Job hazard analysis (JHA). We walk every phase of the build on paper first leading-edge work, floor and roof openings, stairwells, elevator shafts, scaffold access and identify where fall hazards will appear and when.
The hierarchy of fall protection controls. The safest fall is the one that can’t happen. We prioritize in this order: eliminate the hazard through design and sequencing, install passive protection like guardrails and covers, use fall restraint systems that stop workers from reaching an edge, and only then rely on personal fall arrest systems as the last line of defense.
Clear accountability. Every project has a designated competent person trained and authorized to identify fall hazards and stop work immediately to correct them.
Guardrail Systems and Safety Netting: Passive Protection First
Passive fall protection works without the worker having to do anything which is exactly why it’s our first choice.
On elevated slabs, roof edges, stair openings, and leading edges, we install OSHA-compliant guardrail systems with top rails at 42 inches, midrails, and toe boards where falling-object hazards exist. Floor holes and skylight openings are covered, secured, and clearly marked. Where guardrails aren’t practical such as during certain structural or exterior phases safety netting provides a continuous layer of protection beneath work areas.
These physical barriers protect not only our crews but every subcontractor, inspector, and visitor who steps onto the site.
Personal Fall Arrest Systems (PFAS): The ABCs Done Right
When work must happen at unprotected heights, our crews use personal fall arrest systems and we train relentlessly on the “ABCs” of fall arrest:
Anchorage engineered anchor points rated to support at least 5,000 pounds per attached worker. Body harness a properly fitted, full-body safety harness inspected before every use. Connector shock-absorbing lanyards or self-retracting lifelines matched to the available fall clearance.
A harness that doesn’t fit, an anchor that isn’t rated, or a lanyard that’s too long for the fall distance can turn “protected” work into a fatal fall. That’s why PFAS training at PCG covers donning and fitting, anchor selection, fall clearance calculations, and rescue planning because a fall arrest is only successful if the worker can be retrieved quickly and safely.
Ladder and Scaffold Safety
A large share of construction falls don’t happen from rooftops they happen from ladders and scaffolds. Our program enforces the fundamentals: the right ladder for the task, 3-point contact at all times, ladders extended three feet above landing surfaces and secured, and no standing on top caps. Scaffolds are erected, modified, and dismantled only under a competent person’s supervision, fully planked, equipped with guardrails, and inspected before each shift.
Equipment Inspection and Maintenance
Fall protection equipment is life-safety equipment, and we treat it that way. Harnesses, lanyards, lifelines, anchors, guardrails, and netting are inspected on a documented schedule and by the worker before every use. Any component showing wear, damage, or a deployed shock absorber is tagged out and removed from service immediately. After any fall event, all involved equipment is retired, no exceptions.
Building a Safety Culture, Not Just a Safety Binder
The best fall protection plan fails without buy-in from the crew. We build that culture through:
Daily toolbox talks that address the specific fall hazards of that day’s work not generic scripts. Stop-work authority for every worker on site, with zero retaliation. If something looks unsafe, work stops. Near-miss and hazard reporting, because every hazard caught early is an injury prevented.
We also hold our subcontractors to the same standard. On a PCG jobsite, there is one safety program and everyone works under it.
Continuous Improvement, Every Project
Fall protection technology and best practices evolve, and so do we.
